چکیده

In this paper, we will propose a novel bandwidth allocation/sharing/extension (DBASE) protocol to support both asynchronous traffics and multimedia traffics with the characteristics of variable bit rate (VBR) and constant bit rate (CBR) over IEEE 802.11 ad hoc wireless local area networks. Overall quality of service (QoS) will be guaranteed by DBASE. The designed DBASE protocol will reserve bandwidth for real-time stations based on a fair and efficient allocation. Besides, the proposed DBASE is still compliant with the IEEE 802.11 standard. The performance of DBASE is evaluated by analysis and simulations. Simulations show that the DBASE is able to provide almost 90% channel utilization and low packet loss due to delay expiry for real-time multimedia services.

A Hidden Node Aware Network Allocation Vector Management System for Multi-hop Wireless Ad hoc Networks

Many performance evaluations for IEEE 802.11distributed coordination function (DCF) have been previouslyreported in the literature. Some of them have clearly indicatedthat 802.11 MAC protocol has poor performance in multi-hopwireless ad hoc networks due to exposed and hidden nodeproblems. Although RTS/CTS transmission scheme mitigatesthese phenomena, it has not been successful in thoroughlyomit...

DBASE : A Distributed Bandwidth Allocation/Sharing/Extension Protocol for Multimedia over IEEE 802.11 Ad Hoc Wireless LAN

In ad hoc networks, carrier sense multiple access (CSMA) is one of the most pervasive medium access control (MAC) schemes for asynchronous data traffics. However, CSMA could not guarantee the quality of real-time traffics. In this paper, we will propose a distributed bandwidth allocation/sharing/extension (DBASE) protocol to support multimedia traffics with the characteristics of variable bit r...

Medium Access Control Mechanisms in Mobile Ad Hoc Networks

Medium access control protocol plays an important role in providing fair and efficient allocation of limited bandwidth in wireless LANs. The basic medium access model in the IEEE 802.11 standard, known as DCF (Distributed Coordination Function), is widely used in wireless LANs. Research efforts in wireless multihop networks, where wireless nodes need to forward packets on other’s behalf, try to...

Evaluation of a BIBD Based Directional MAC Protocol for Wireless Ad Hoc Networks

The use of directional antennas in wireless ad hoc networks can significantly improve global performance due to a high spatial channel reuse. Nevertheless, its introduction poses new location dependent problems related to the MAC protocol. In this paper, the Balanced Incomplete Block Design theory has been exploited to develop a new MAC protocol for wireless ad hoc networks using directional ant...

An Optimal Rate Adjustment Algorithm for Medium Access Control Protocol in 802.11 Multi Hop Ad Hoc Networks

Problem statement: Medium Access Control (MAC) protocol plays an important role in providing a fair and efficient allocation of limited bandwidth in wireless LANs. In IEEE 802.11 standard protocol, data rate selection is not specified. Rate control is the process of switching data rates dynamically based on channel conditions, with the target of selecting the rate that will provide the maximum ...
